Revving into 2025: NNRG’s First Open Day a Huge Success

We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year. On Saturday 12th April, the Northern National Restoration Group (NNRG) hosted its first Open Day of 2025, and what a day it turned out to be! From the grand reveal of our newest vehicle to an unforgettable end-of-day run to Penshaw Monument, the day was packed with highlights and brilliant community spirit.
The Star of the Show: Vehicle 3633
One of the day’s biggest moments came with the official unveiling of NNRG Vehicle 3633. After weeks of being kept quiet we finally pulled back the covers to reveal this stunning new addition to the fleet — and the crowd’s reaction said it all. 3633 was professionally restored at Gardners coach works 15 years ago and then sat there until 12th March 2025 when she moved to NNRG.
The saving of 3633 reflects our commitment to preserving transport heritage in the North East, and it was a proud moment to welcome 3633 into our preserved fleet.
A Chat with the Chairman
Guests also had the chance to sit in on an informal but engaging Q&A session with NNRG Chairman, Craig. He spoke about the group’s growth, the hard work going on behind the scenes, upcoming plans for the fleet, and the importance of public support through memberships and volunteering.
From the technical challenges of restorations to future ambitions and how every penny helps, Craig’s passion for NNRG shone through — and it was brilliant to see so many people staying behind to chat and ask questions afterward.
Vehicle Runs & Community Buzz
Throughout the day, a selection of preserved vehicles were out and about for short rides, offering guests a taste of nostalgia — and a unique view of transport history in motion. Whether you were on board or watching from the roadside, it was a real treat to see the fleet in action and hear the unmistakable sound of history on the move.
And of course, the depot was alive with conversation, catch-ups, and new faces. Merchandise flew off the shelves, tea and cakes were flowing, and our ever-knowledgeable volunteers were on hand for tours, and stories from the garage floor.
The Iconic Finale: Cavalcade to Penshaw Monument
As the sun dipped lower, engines fired up for our traditional end-of-day cavalcade — heading proudly toward Penshaw Monument. It was a sight to behold: a line of gleaming heritage vehicles making the scenic run in convoy, turning heads and honking horns the whole way.
It’s a moment that never gets old — and it capped off the day in perfect NNRG style.
£640 Raised – Thank You!
Thanks to the generosity of those who attended — and the amazing support we receive year after year — we’re proud to share that £640 was raised during the event. These funds will go directly into vehicle upkeep, restoration materials, and supporting our events throughout the year. Every pound helps keep the wheels turning.
Here’s to the Rest of 2025
To everyone who turned up, got involved, or helped behind the scenes — thank you. The support means the world to us, and we’re already gearing up for what’s next.
If you’re not already a member, there’s never been a better time to join the NNRG family. Keep an eye on our website and social media for the latest news, event dates, and ways to support the cause.
See you on the road!
