The history of 5220:
5220 was delivered new in late 2004 as part of a batch of Wright Solar bodied Scania
L94UBs for Go North East, entering service in the “Loop” branding.
The bus was built to a modern specification for its time, combining the robust Scania chassis with the stylish Wright Solar bodywork – a popular choice across the UK in the early 2000s.
During its life in service with Go North East, 5220 was repainted, often serving routes
in the Gateshead areas. It wore various versions of the "loop" livery over the years.
After withdrawal from Go North East on the 5th January 2020, 5220 was sold into the
private sector and saw further use with GEM Travel, a smaller North East operator. It
retained its core structure but received updated vinyls and painted into plain white.
Whilst with GEM travel 5220 served school and local contracts.
In May 2025, 5220 was saved for preservation by an enthusiast committed to keeping North East public transport heritage alive. This bus is now undergoing restoration
work.
The goal is to return 5220 to a smart, presentable condition – in a former Go North East livery – to
preserve its place in local transport history.
