NK05GZR - Volvo B7TL Wright Eclipse Gemini

A look back at the working life of a North East bus

Before becoming part of the Northern National Restoration Group's preserved fleet, 3943 – NK05 GZR spent almost two decades carrying passengers across the North East.

Built in 2005, 3943 is a Volvo B7TL chassis fitted with Wright Eclipse Gemini bodywork. It was built for Go North East and formed part of the company's growing fleet of Volvo B7TL Gemini double-deckers during the mid-2000s. Contemporary fleet records list 3943 as a 2005 vehicle with a 74-seat configuration.

Almost 20 years of service

3943's working life is a reminder of how quickly the North East bus scene has changed.

When it entered service in 2005, the Volvo B7TL and Wright Eclipse Gemini combination was a modern double-deck design. Almost two decades later, 3943 had become one of the older members of the Go North East fleet.

During those years it carried thousands of passengers, worked countless journeys and appeared in numerous liveries and on a huge variety of routes.

Its history includes the X10, Red Arrows X1, local Sunderland and County Durham services, Metro replacement work and many other duties.

For a bus that was once simply another working vehicle in the Go North East fleet, its working life has left behind a substantial photographic and enthusiast record.

A familiar sight across the region

As the years passed, 3943 became a remarkably versatile member of the Go North East fleet.

It was regularly seen on services across Tyne and Wear and County Durham, working from different depots and appearing in a number of different liveries.

By the early 2010s, 3943 had become associated with the Red Arrows X1, operating between Newcastle and Easington Lane.

The bus subsequently worked a wide variety of routes operating services including the 55, 56, 61, 69, X88 and 94, as well as Metro replacement services. It could be found in places including Sunderland, Gateshead, Newcastle, Peterlee, Hetton-le-Hole and beyond.

Starting out on the X10

One of the earliest recorded roles for 3943 was on the X10, the long-distance service linking the North East with Middlesbrough.

Photographs from June 2005 show 3943 operating on the X10 shortly after entering service, with the bus carrying the branding associated with the route.

The X10 would remain an important part of 3943's early history.

From NK05 GZR to FCU 190

3943 also has an interesting registration history.

For much of its life it was known as NK05 GZR, but it briefly carried the private registration FCU 190.

In 2020, Go North East's fleet archive recorded that 3943 had been re-registered from NK05 GZR to FCU 190, before later regaining its original registration.

The FCU 190 registration was subsequently associated with another Go North East vehicle, making NK05 GZR once again the registration carried by 3943.

Still working after 15 years

One of the most notable aspects of 3943's career is how long it remained in active service.

By 2020, the bus was already around 15 years old, yet it continued to appear regularly on passenger services around the North East.

Photographs from September 2020 show 3943 operating the 55 between Wingate and Sunderland, while other photographs from the same period record it on services around Sunderland and Newcastle. The vehicle had also received a repaint into Go North East's then-current generic 2019 fleet livery.

Its career continued well into the 2020s. Records show appearances on services including the 61, 56, 33, 39B and X900, demonstrating just how useful these vehicles remained to the operator even after newer generations of buses had entered the fleet.

A piece of North East transport history

Today, 3943 is no longer simply another bus on the road.

Its working career represents an important period in North East bus history — the transition from the older generation of step-entrance and early low-floor buses to the modern accessible double-deckers that would dominate services throughout the region.

The Volvo B7TL and Wright Eclipse Gemini combination became an instantly recognisable sight across the North East, and 3943 was one of the vehicles that helped make that generation of buses so familiar.

After years of carrying passengers around the region, 3943 now has the opportunity to have its story preserved for future generations.
