3943 – Bringing a North East Favourite Back into Preservation

The Northern National Restoration Group is delighted to welcome 3943 (NK05 GZR) into preservation.

Built in 2005, 3943 is a Volvo B7TL fitted with Wright Eclipse Gemini bodywork, representing an important period in the development of Go North East's double-deck fleet. The vehicle was one of a batch of 3 Volvo B7TL Gemini buses delivered new to Go North East during the mid-2000s and has spent much of its life serving communities across the North East.

For many enthusiasts and passengers, buses such as 3943 are particularly significant because they are now becoming an increasingly familiar reminder of a recent era of North East bus operation. Although these vehicles may not yet be considered "old" by traditional preservation standards, their working lives and the services they operated are already becoming part of transport history.

A bus with plenty of history

3943 has carried the registration NK05 GZR throughout much of its service life, although it briefly carried the private registration FCU 190.

During its Go North East career, 3943 could be found working across a wide variety of services. Its early career included appearances on the X10, with photographs from 2005 showing the bus in service shortly after entering operation.

Over the years, 3943 went on to work a wide range of duties around the region, including local services, special workings and replacement services. Its versatility meant that it remained a familiar sight long after the routes and liveries it had originally been associated with had changed.

In later years the bus continued to see service around Sunderland, Gateshead and other parts of the North East, including Metro replacement work.

Now entering preservation

After 21 years of service, the decision was made to give 3943 a new chapter away from the demands of everyday passenger operation.

For NNRG, preserving 3943 is about much more than saving another bus.

Vehicles like 3943 tell the story of the North East's more recent transport history. Thousands of passengers will have travelled on these buses, whether commuting to work, travelling to school or college, shopping, visiting family or simply travelling around the region.

The Wright Eclipse Gemini body is also a particularly recognisable part of the North East's bus landscape, making 3943 an important vehicle for future generations to see and experience.

The road ahead

As with every vehicle entering preservation, there is plenty of work ahead.

Our priority is to ensure that 3943 is safely stored, maintained and gradually brought back to a standard where it can once again represent the vehicles and services that formed such an important part of everyday life across the region.

Restoration takes time, money, parts and, most importantly, volunteers. Every job completed by an NNRG member helps bring these vehicles one step closer to being enjoyed by future generations.

3943 will also provide our members with the opportunity to develop practical skills in mechanical work, electrical systems, bodywork and vehicle preservation.

Preserving the recent past

The preservation of vehicles from the 2000s is becoming increasingly important.

As newer buses replace them in everyday service, vehicles such as 3943 can disappear surprisingly quickly. By preserving one, we can ensure that the story of this generation of North East buses is not forgotten.

At NNRG, our aim is to preserve vehicles that have played a significant role in the region's transport history and to share that history with the wider community.

3943 now has a new journey ahead of it — and we look forward to bringing you updates as that journey continues.
